Can I become a Witch and learn to do spells?

The answer to this question is yes, and no. If anyone can become a Witch is dependent on a few things. One of those is the type of Witch. Many Covens require strict initiation, many are hereditary, and many will not allow new people to join them. So, no, you could not become a Witch in one of those Covens. However, there are many Covens who do allow new members. You would have to find one of these, be initiated, and go forth from there on your path of Witchery.

Alternately, you can teach yourself to be a Witch. This path may be more difficult, as no one is able to guide you if you go astray. Learning bad habits as far as spell casting can be catastrophic in the sense that you simply may never get any spells to work by yourself! Witchcraft, much like any other skilled trade, often requires an apprenticeship under someone more skilled to show you the ropes. You certainly can learn yourself, but it is not easy.

That being said, I do not intend to discourage anyone from learning to cast spells and become a Witch if they so desire. I believe each and every person can do it, if they are truly devoted! And devotion is exactly what it takes. You will have to spend hours daily practicing in order to begin seeing any results at all. In this fashion, it is much like learning to play a musical instrument. At first you see little results, it’s tedious, and many people give up. Only later does it become exciting and rewarding. It is completely up to you if you feel up to the task!

A final note of caution about casting spells – casting spells improperly can be dangerous. When casting a spell you are dealing with strong energetic and spiritual forces. The failure to control those correctly, to handle them appropriately, and to shield yourself from them can result in damage. Imagine, if you will, an electrician. Electricians can do amazing things, but they must be trained appropriately. This training includes how to handle electricity safely and how to use electrical tools, such as rubber gloves, to protect oneself from electrical shock. Similarly, the aspiring Witch will have to teach his or herself to avoid a ‘shock’ of sorts!
